DC Rebirth: New Titles Revealed
DC’s publication of the new Rebirth season is rapidly moving upon us. Starting from June a re-imagining of their classic comic book staples will be unfolded. Comic fans, prepare yourselves, titles announced in the rebirth series include most of the publication’s classics – Batman, Superman, Aquaman, The Flash and Green Lanterns. The Watchmen is now converged into alignment with Superman and the other franchises, incorporating into continuity with other characters in the mainstream DC universe
This line-wide relaunch of several DC universe storylines will see a wave of new titles hitting the stores. According to DC, the Rebirth will propel the timelines back to before the New 52 and Flashpoint season. At the same time the new reinterpretation performs a realignment of these two pre-existing universes and at least some of the existing elements of New 52 are promised to remain.
The DC Rebirth Special #1 writer and DC creative officer Geoff Johns described the new identity as: “Rebirth is about focusing in on the core of the character and their respective universe.” “It brings back what has been lost: the legacy of the characters, the love and the hope of the DCU.”
The one-shot DC Universe: Rebirth Special #1 was released on May 25, 2016 defining the concepts behind the change in direction. On June 1st the one-shot Rebirth editions were released introducing the new comic landscape our familiar super heroes and villains will be appearing in. According to the release schedule, the Rebirth one-shots will each be followed by entirely new series.
Definitely not a relaunch any comic fans want to miss out on. For the hardcore followers this a brief overview of how the re-imaging will affect our favorite DC legends. In the Superman Rebirth, the older version of superman complete with a beard re-appears, replacing his younger New 52 counterpart. People who disliked the Batman vs Superman movie may not appreciate the beginning of Rebirth #1, but give it a chance. Superman and Lois Lane are back together. The duo are presented with a new challenge in raising their son, but encouraging the super progeny in how to manage his awesome powers is no easy task. Will the older and more wizoned Superman agree to become earth’s hero once again?
Batman Rebirth #1 has not altered the hallmarks of the classic version too significantly. The Caped Crusader is back doing what he does best, fighting crime in Gotham City. It is not altogether clear on who from the tapestry of the Batman universe will be making an appearance. Calendar Man is causing mischief again in Gotham, altering his persona from earlier versions and New 52, the super villain in this incarnation dies every winter and is reborn in the summer. In New 52 the Calendar Man was re-envisaged rather curiously as a very different character, a lifestyle reporter. Former street vigilante Duke Thomas is the new partner of the Caped Crusader.
As for the Green Lantern, in this rebirth edition Hal Jordan has departed to a distant region of the galaxy on Green Lantern Corps business, entrusting the safety of Earth in his absence to Green Lanterns in training Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. A new danger to Earth immediately emerges from the Red Lanterns, prompting a perilous inaugural mission for the planet’s new protectors.
The Green Arrow/Oliver Queen is in many ways a re-emergence of the 1970s version, with the liberal, political cause supporting Green Arrow returning. Black Canary makes a welcome return to the Green Arrow universe, she is however non to impressed with the conundrum of a billionaire who is a social justice warrior. A new villain soon appears for Oliver Queen and Black Canary, who is causing major problems in Star City.
