Preacher AMC

Preacher was originally a comic book created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon for Vertigo in 1995.  This supernatural comic thriller was an instant classic and the Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production five episodes in is doing justice to the comics. The show debuted on May 22nd 2016 on AMC and has brought together executive producers Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg and showrunner Sam Catlin. They have crafted a dark comedy with some truly hair raising set pieces.

“Preacher” follows a Texan preacher, Jesse Custer who is inhabited by a mysterious entity and encounters a series of supernatural characters. In the pilot episode, a strange comet is causing much destruction from Nairobi Africa to West Texas. Jesse Custer is struck by the comet as the seemingly supernatural evil infects the town of Anneville. The entire town descends into some form of chaos.

As the season progressed Jesse learns more about the mysterious entity that has taken over his body. A bizarre assortment of characters enter the fray, most are decidedly not of the human variety, including two shadowy angels, Fiore and DeBlanc. Certainly, the show does not hold back with violence and exploding bodies. The show stars Dominic Cooper, Joseph Gilgun, Lucy Griffiths, W. Earl Brown, Ruth Negga, Anatol Yusef and Tom Brooke. Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer and Ruth Negga as Tulip O’Hare are unswervingly riveting viewing.

The TV audience figures point to the show gaining a strong following almost straight away. The Nielsen ratings for the series premiere of “Preacher” inform that 3.8 million viewers watched the show, the numbers were up 61% from live the same day. Ten episodes are scheduled for this initial season, and it’s just possible that Preacher will be as memorable as the comic book.
