Dark Horse is publishing Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash, a new original graphic novel by the acclaimed artist Dave McKean based on the life of surrealist painter Paul Nash. Black Dog takes biographical moments from Paul Nash’s life and explorations of his work, writing, and imagination and mixes them with first hand accounts of the First World War. Nash served as an official war artist on the Western Front and his vivid depictions lasted long in the memory.

David McKean’s graphic novel is presented as a series of surreal dreams, the stories add up to a moving piece about how war and extreme situations change us and how we deal with the resulting pain, in Nash’s case, by turning landscapes into powerful and fantastical “psychoscapes”. The artwork certainly looks visually stunning.

Best known for his collaborations with Neil Gaiman, McKean defied expectations with his stunning debue as writer and artist in Cages, winner of multiple awards for Best Graphic Album. McKean is also the winner of the Alph-Art, Pantera and BSFA awards. Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash is in stores October 5, 2016.
